Obituary of Iva Grace Foster
The name Iva means God is Gracious- which also matches her middle name, Grace.
Iva Grace Carrell-Foster Canning, passed very peacefully at home, with her family beside her, on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, in Beaverlodge, AB, at the age of 101 years.
Iva was born July 2, 1921, in Beaverlodge. Iva spent her early years in Beaverlodge, later training to become a teacher and a nurse for the war efforts. She married Raymond Foster of Sexsmith, AB, where she raised her 4 children. She was a school teacher and farmer.
Later she married Elmer Canning of Dawson Creek, BC, and they happily spent their retirement years, traveling, dancing, and loving their combined families.
Her most recent 20 years have been lived in the wonderful community of Amisk Court in Beaverlodge (1 block from her childhood home). From this little home, which she just loved, she spent her days enjoying the friends/residents, and many activities, as well as continuing to travel to visit her welcoming families.
Iva loved to travel, visit family and friends, dance, paint, tai chi, do public speaking, and exercise of all sorts- including standing on her head! Her teaching career spanned many decades and most of her students became lifelong long friends, as well as benefiting from her knowledge. Iva was very active with Daughters of the Nile, Tai Chi clubs, the local Historical Society and Museum, and many art groups.
Iva is survived by her loving children: Janus (Ray) Olson; Ben (Lorraine) Foster, and Ruth (Tony) Holmes; daughter in-law Cecilie Letting; as well as 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; dearest stepchildren Doug (Helen) Canning, and Diane (Brian) Shellborne, and their wonderful extended families.
She was predeceased by her loving, pioneer parents, Ruth and Ralph Carrell, son Dwain Foster, sisters Gwen and Eunice, brothers Don and Pat, and husbands Ray and Elmer.
Iva has requested, and insisted, that no funeral is to take place.
