Obituary of Jean Matvichuk

Jean Matvichuk, a long time resident of Beaverlodge and area passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014 in Beaverlodge, Alberta at the age of 81 years. Jean was born in Paris, France on September 18, 1932. She was the second daughter of Michel and Stefania Dzuira. She lost her father while still a toddler and was raised by her Mother throughout the difficult years of the War in France. In 1948 Jean, her mother and her sister Francoise immigrated to Manitoba to be with her maternal grandfather. A few months later Jean acquired a step-father when her mother married Joseph Zadorozny, and the new family moved to the farm at Goodfare. She attended high school in Hythe. Jean worked for a while for a family in Edmonton. On a trip home to Hythe she met a Ukrainian rig worker at the local snack bar. On July 22, 1955 Jean married Joe Matvichuk. They purchased the Goodfare farm and lived there happily for 40 years. Life wasn't easy living in the log house and farming with horses. There were many hardships and many blessings, especially the birth of their daughter Joann. Joe worked the rigs for 30 years to supplement the farm income and Jean raised their daughter and looked after the cows and the garden. They both enjoyed the company of their many friends and neighbors. In 1993 the farm was sold and Jean and Joe moved to a modern acreage in the Halcourt area. They enjoyed their time together until Joe's tragic death in 2004. In 2005 Jean moved to Beaverlodge where she threw herself into service to the community. Her work at the Thrift Shop and her time spent with the seniors groups resulted in many wonderful friendships. She was also very devoted to her daughter and grandsons in Lethbridge. Jean is survived by her daughter Joann and Jay Huson, her grandsons Jobe and Jarius, her sister Francis Smith of Edmonton, niece Karen Stix and her family of Edmonton, Terry Smith and his family in Calgary. Jean is also mourned by the extended Matvichuk family and her many devoted friends. She was very grateful for the love and support she received during the final struggle with her illness. A Memorial Service was held on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Beaverlodge Alliance Church. Ken Death officiated. Interment will be at a later date.
