Shorty Atkinson

Obituary of Shorty Atkinson

Shorty Atkinson, a long time resident of Goodfare, Alberta passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at home surrounded by her family at the age of 86 years. Shorty was born in Cadillac, Saskatchewan, daughter of Patricia Wright and Bill Goodings. Shorty was a mom and granny to so many more than just her immediate family. Her door was always open to everyone, especially during the holidays. Age may be measured in years, but Granny Shorty was far younger than her 86 years. Up until her last few months she treasured her independence, still loved to drive, go on quad trips in the meadow, garden, bake her famous Granny buns and was a dedicated fan at her grandkids hockey games. She was a sharp shooter, a mechanic when needed, a community seamstress, a firebug, loved dancing, was a diehard Oilers fan, a card shark, and never said no to do the odd jello shot shared with her grandchildren. Shorty was also a dedicated Legion Member and volunteer for many, many years. Themes that were common to her character were faith, family and friends, and all that goes with that. She was definitely a prayer warrior, her faith and spirituality and importance of church and the goodness of God were never hidden; they were there for all to see and benefit from. She loved and cared for all of her grandkids, and although she kept their individual secrets, she would also ask others in the family to pray for them if she felt it was needed. Granny Shorty was gracious to fault, never complaining through her illness. Her sense of humour, strength and faith were an inspiration to her family and everyone who met her. Shorty was an adoptive parent to anyone who was in need and had the privilege of getting to know her. Her hospitality and generosity were overflowing whether to family, friends or to complete strangers. Shorty was predeceased by her parents, husband Sam and their eldest daughter Sandra. Shorty is survived by her seven children: Sheree (Roger Loberg), Susan (David Antonio), Bernadine (Alec McPherson), Teressa (Robert Hill), Sam Atkinson (Betty), Grace (Terry Jones), and Gwen (Dennis May), along with 20 grandchildren and their spouses, and 25 great grandchildren, her brother Jack Goodings and seven half-brothers and sisters, as well as everyone who knew and loved her as Granny/Aunt Shorty. A Prayer Service was held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 7:00 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Beaverlodge, Alberta. A Funeral Service was held on Monday, April 17, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Father Sylvanus Omali officiated. Interment was held in the Hythe Cemetery where Shorty was laid to rest with her husband Sam. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Shorty to the Hythe Legion, PO Box 626 Hythe, AB T0H2C0. Very Respectfully Beaverlodge Funeral Service
