Obituary of Isabel Maria Calliou

Isabel Calliou, a lifelong resident of Kelly Lake, B.C., passed away on Friday, March 4, 2016 in Beaverlodge, Alberta at the age of 81 years. Isabel Maria Gladue was born on November 17, 1934 to parents Isidore and Annie Gladue. She was born and raised in Kelly Lake and was the eighth of fifteen children. She spoke fluent Cree as well as English. Many of the respected elders said she had lighter skin and was a very beautiful young woman. Isabel married the one and only true love of her life at sixteen years of age. The relationship her and Joe shared is, and will always be an inspiration to their family. They shared 56 years of marriage, and raised eight of their own children, many other children, and their grandchildren. Their home was always full of visitors. Isabel always loved a gathering, especially a card game of poker or 21. Isabel would frequent car bingos, and when you got a bingo you would honk the horn. Eventually people started to go to bingo halls. Isabel was the queen of the bingo hall. She played as often as a bingo game was held, from afternoon to late night, and yes, all in the same day, all week long. Isabel loved to go out dancing with Joe. They loved old country music and fiddle music. Isabel spent many years at Moose Camp at Wapiti River. As soon as the snow would melt, she would pack up her trailer, make a kitchen in the wilderness, and spend the entire summer living off the land. She would hunt with Joe, and make moose hides. She enjoyed the summer getaway to teach the younger generation their culture and the traditions of their people. Isabel and Joe also spent their 50th Wedding Anniversary out there. Isabel always believed if there was a will there is always a way. She taught her grandchildren to always have the last word and go after what they want in life, to overcome obstacles and get on with things as she never held a grudge. Isabel was predeceased by her parents Isidore and Annie Gladue, her husband Joseph Calliou, her grandson Preston Calliou, and great grandchild Dallas Auger. Isabel is survived by her children: Brenda, Sidney, Bernadine, Beverly, Betty, Patsey, and Ruth, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and many friends. We say goodbye to a cherished elder of Kelly Lake, Isabel Maria Calliou will be dearly missed. A Wake was held on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the Kelly Lake Community Centre. A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Kelly Lake Community Centre. Father Arul Arockiasamy officiated. Interment followed in the Kelly Lake Cemetery.
