Obituary of Kathleen Weir Dupont

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Kathleen Weir Dupont, a long time resident of Goodfare, Alberta passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in Beaverlodge, Alberta at the age of 87 years. Kathleen Madeline Diewold was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan on October 1, 1926 to Adam and Christina Diewold. Kathleen was the second youngest of nine children. Her family owned the general store in Cactus Lake, Saskatchewan. Where throughout her childhood she was kept busy helping run the store. As a young woman she worked as a clerical worker for the town of Lebret. She met and fell in love with a handsome young man named Joseph Weir, whose father was the local grain terminal agent. She and Joe married in September 1947, together they had four children. Joe worked in the Diewold General Store while Nana ran a fish and chip stand, allowing her to both work and tend to Bob, Maureen, and Jackie. In 1960 they moved to Milden, Saskatchewan. Joe worked as a traveling salesmen for Gaults Canada. With Joe gone for long periods of time, she taught the Highland Fling and Catechism Classes, also volunteering at the Catholic Church. She did all of this along with tending to her household and large garden. In the summer of 1965 Joe accepted a promotion, this moving the family to Grande Prairie, Alberta. There in February 1966 they welcomed baby number four. Early the next year Joe was diagnosed with lung cancer. Realizing that his family needed providing for, Joe in the summer of 1968 bought a small general store and post office in a little country community called Goodfare. There his wife could work and support their children, they would be taken care of. Joe passed away on January 3, 1971. Now alone with four children, she ran the store with cleanliness, precision, and always a welcoming face to the locals. She shared many memories and stories of her customers. Nana was always a lady, she had class like no other. Her hair and clothing was always of cleanliness, style, and sophistication. Being a frugal lady she was always able to present herself in this manner without spending a lot of money. The only exception being her fur coat. She had a mink coat custom made with her initials embroidered inside. She looked simply elegant whenever she wore her coat to special occasions. She started a long courtship with a local bachelor named Stanley Dupont, whom she married on July 26, 1980. For the next 33 years they were never apart. They worked hard building their farm and raising their ever growing family. The farm fulfilled them. They worked hard, but that was their "patch of heaven". As her and Papa's health declined, the thought of leaving their nest was devastating. But ever tough and proud, they with heavy hearts moved to the Hythe Pioneer Lodge, where they lived out the remainder of their days. Her great-grandchildren made her eyes light up and heart fill with joy. She absolutely loved those babies and Nana was always one of the first visitors to come see the new bundle. As they grew she would fill them with chips, pop, and ice cream. Even in the Lodge she had a drawer filled with treats. She would sit, watch them, with a smile of satisfaction on her face. She was a go getter, always on the moved. Her motto was "Good O!". She was a strong woman with a determined will. She endured, she was a survivor through the good and the bad, she persevered with class and strength. They say when "someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure." Heaven definitely has a treasure. Kathleen was predeceased by her parents, three brothers, four sisters and late husbands Joseph Weir and Stanley Dupont, and son-in-law Dale Schweitzer. Kathleen is survived by her children; Bob (Nicole), Maureen (Gary), Jackie (Roy), and Marlene (Lance), her grandchildren; Carolyn (Fab), Bobbylyn (Joce), Jennifer (George), Melissa (Chris), Joe (Jodie), Jessica (Derek), Amanda (Kip), Alana (Russ), Matthew (April), and Thomas (Tori), her great grandchildren; Keegan, Anaya, Adam, Samantha, Trystan, Kalen, Anna, Soren, Archer, Ella, Laney, Morgan, and Drew. Along with her brother Adam, whom she fondly called Cub, numerous nieces and nephews, along with special lifetime friends. Following a private graveside service in Grande Prairie, a Celebration of Kathleen's Life was held on Monday, May 12, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Goodfare Community Hall. Ella Loberg officiated. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Kathleen to the Goodfare Community Hall, Site 6 Box 124 Hythe, AB T0H2C0. Very Respectfully Beaverlodge Funeral Service
