Obituary of Doreen Gladis Flaten

Doreen Gladys Flaten, a resident of Hythe, Alberta passed away with family by her side on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 in the Beaverlodge Hospital at the age of 84 years. Doreen Teulon was born in Lymburn on April 20, 1935. She attended Lambert, Southwell and Hythe Schools. Doreen started to work at the age of 13 doing housework for Mrs. Miller. After Doreen finished school she went to work at the Hythe Hospital as the cook and stayed there until she married. Doreen married Gilman Flaten on November 24, 1954. They spent their first winter in a small sawmill camp. Although living conditions were rough by today’s standards, many lifelong friends were made. In May of 1956, their first son Robert was born and a short 16 months later in November of 1957, their second son Kevin arrived. Doreen and Gilman took over the family farm in 1959 after the death of Gilman’s father. In September 1961, their last son Lorne finished their little family. Doreen was a dedicated farm wife who loved to cook and bake. She took great pride in preparing meals for her family. Anyone who stopped by unexpectedly would be guaranteed coffee and sweets, and if the visit was extended, a full meal deal complete with fresh buns was in store. Doreen also extended her love for cooking at logging and rig camps. Doreen helped with the farm chores including milking cows, as well as feeding pigs and chickens. Curling bonspiels were always the highlight of the winter months, often complete with a good after party. Pansies and sweet peas were her favorite flowers and she loved to tend to her bountiful garden. Quilting and playing Bonko was also a favorite pastime. Doreen was a member of the Hythe Legion Ladies Auxillary and also the Valhalla Lutheran Ladies Aid. In 1997, Doreen and Gilman retired and moved to Hythe where together they enjoyed travelling, visiting, playing cards, music festivals, camping and loved social gatherings where they met many friends. Doreen and Gilman enjoyed 4 beautiful grandchildren who gave them great pleasure, as well as kept them on their toes, both on the farm and in retirement. Later Doreen was blessed with 10 great grandchildren who continued to keep her busy and her home full of love. In July of 2000, Doreen lost the love of her life of 46 years, her best friend and forever soul mate. Doreen and Gilman truly had a wonderful marriage. When Gilman passed a huge void was left in her heart. There wasn’t a day that went by that she didn’t think about Gilman and long for their time together back. In later years, Doreen travelled with Ruby Reed on bus tours to Reno and Laughlin, flew to Vancouver Island to visit an old school friend, as well as camped at the Jones Jamboree for several years. Marie Oakford was also a travelling companion attending many musical events with Doreen. She got the opportunity to go on a Caribbean cruise and a few trips to Arizona to visit her sister, Pat, which she enjoyed with her siblings. In March 2011, Doreen moved into the Hythe Pioneer Home to assist with her mom’s failing health. She decided to stay and call it her new home. Doreen enjoyed her years at the home visiting with friends, listening to musical entertainers, going on field trips, playing cards, bingo and doing puzzles. Doreen will be sadly missed by: son Robert (Mary) and family Arlen (Nicole), Madysun and Jordyn, Kari (Cody), Felix, Elliott and Quinn; son Kevin; son Lorne (Dorothy) and family Lane (Erin), Landen, Rowen and Brielle, Lacy (Carter), Mason and Joss; sisters Margaret MacAulay, Pat Miller, Edna Sandboe, Mabel (Larry) Hanson, brother Tom (Denise) Teulon, sister-in-law Amie Carter and numerous relatives and friends.
