Obituary of Wilfred James Beattie
Jim Beattie, a long time resident of Goodfare, Alberta passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, September 13, 2014 in Beaverlodge, Alberta at the age of 71 years. Wilfred James Beattie was born on October 21, 1942 to parents Jack and Julia Beattie in Dawson Creek, B.C. He spent his younger years in Goodfare. This is where Jim attended school. As some of you will remember, it was a one room schoolhouse with one teacher from Grade One to Eleven. Jim must have felt that it was too crowed and somebody else needed his seat. At 15 years of age Jim went to Trutch where he learned to guide from Don Peck. While doing so he managed to get his picture on the cover of Outdoor Life Magazine. Jim’s mother Julia Beattie was working as a cook in the camp at this time. From some of the stories that Jim has told about his time guiding, it’s obvious that his sense of humor started at a young age. He tells the story of guiding with Don and that they were having trouble with a pack horse. They couldn’t catch and keep the horse in the corral which was just outside of one of the log cabins. They had been chasing this horse for a couple of days and one evening at the supper table Don said, “Jim the next time you see that pack horse, shoot it. We’ll use it for bear bait.” Jim got up from the table, reached behind the door and got his gun, pointed it out the door. Don asked him what he was doing, Jim said, “Going to shoot the horse, it’s standing in the corral.” Don’s yelling, “No, no, don’t shoot. Close the gate.” While living in Trutch, Jim met Louise Berube in 1960 and they were married on October 20, 1962 in Beaverlodge. They moved to Whitehorse in 1968 where he worked as a truck driver for White Pass. It was here that Jim found a way again to get in the newspaper. Jim was featured in the Vancouver Sun when they had an article on the company, White Pass that he was working for. One of the dispatchers recommended Jim for this article because they wanted someone with a colorful personality. Jim and Louise’s first child Bill was born in Whitehorse in 1969, followed by their daughter Shauneen in 1971. The family of four moved back to Goodfare in 1974, where they have resided since on the family farm. Jim worked as an oilfield consultant for the remainder of his working days. Jim was predeceased by his parents Jack and Julia Beattie, his brother Dale and sister-in-law Marie Beattie, his brother Julian Beattie, and his sister Colleen Beattie. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Louise, children Bill and Shauneen, grandchildren Brandon, Rae-Lynn, and Tristan, his brother Austin and sister-in-law Virginia as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Hythe Legion. Father Arul Arockiasamy officiated. Interment followed in the Hythe Cemetery. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Jim to the Beaverlodge Palliative Care Unit, Box 480 Beaverlodge AB T0H0C0. Very Respectfully Beaverlodge Funeral Service
