Obituary of Stanley Wilton Dupont

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, Stanley Dupont, a long time resident of Goodfare, Alberta. Stanley passed away peacefully in Beaverlodge on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the age of 81 years. Stan worked hard all of his life, he stooked and threshed grain with his father and brother in his earlier years. He worked for various logging camps and in road construction, and for the county operating a Euclid. He built the road that goes to Wallan's farm. Stan lived in this community all of his life. He had a great love of the land. Farming was his life. He loved watching the first seeds sprouting from the ground in the spring as much as he did watching the grain pour out of the combine spout in the fall. He also had cattle. He always thought that a farm was not a farm unless there was something alive on it, so it was with great sadness to him when his herd had to be sold after his heart surgery in 1997, as he found it was too taxing to keep up. But he kept on grain farming, putting his last crop in, in 2011. There was a group of sharp tails that showed up the last few winters. He would get up early and spread grain for them because they would show up at 8 in the morning, then he would sit at his kitchen window watching them. He was able to make friends with whatever bird or animal that crossed his path. His whiskey jacks would eat out of his hands. He would even be able to kiss some of his cows on the mouth. Stan was a very social person, he always had time for a visit. In his early years he was an avid curler. Jim Walker, Neil Bonk, Lorne Mackie and himself would put in a team every winter, and they even made the local paper. His friends and neighbors could always rely on him anytime they needed a helping hand. If he had something someone needed he would lend it willingly. He was a very proud man, his word was his bond. Stan was also a great historian. He could recall the name of every homesteader in the area, and which quarters they lived on and for how long. Even how many children they had. The last year we spent a lot of time together and I loved listening to his stories. I wish I would have taped our conversations, what a great gift that would have been to hand down. A bachelor for 49 years, he fell in love with my mom, Kathleen. After a long courtship, they were married on July 26, 1980. It must have been daunting for him to overnight have a wife, children and grandchildren, but he took it all in stride and was able to make time for all of us. He was always very supportive, never referred to us as his stepchildren, but always as his son or daughters. Stan and mom worked very hard building the farm. They got great satisfaction in each other's company and sharing their life together. They never strayed very far from home. On behalf of our family, I would like to sincerely thank the doctors and nurses from the Renal Insufficiency Clinic in Edmonton, Papa always looked forward to our telehealth sessions and speaking to Liz and Debra. Thank you to Dr. Hunter and Brenda, the staff at the Beaverlodge Hospital and Homecare for all their support throughout the past year. Also to the staff at the Hythe Pioneer Lodge, you have treated him with such love, dignity and respect since he came to live with you. The move from the farm was very hard and upsetting for both of them. You opened their hearts, and made the transition that much easier for them. You continue to treat our mom like she is your mom, for that we are eternally grateful. In closing, the phrase that keeps coming into my thoughts was one that Papa always used whenever we'd return home from a long trip or a short one, "Well, we're all here, 'cause we're not all there." We'll always love you Papa, thank you for loving us and making it easy for us to love you and for being the dad you didn't have to be. Stan is survived by: his loving wife Kathleen of 33 years; son Bob (Nicole); daughters Maureen (Gary), Jackie (Roy), and Marlene (Lance); grandchildren Carolyn (Fab), Bobbylyn (Joce), Jessica (Derek), Amanda (Kip), Alana (Russ), Jennifer (George), Melissa (Chris), Joe (Jodie), Matthew (April), and Thomas (Tori); great-grandchildren Keegan, Anaya, Adam, Samantha, Trystan, Kalen, Soren, Archer, Anna, Laney, Morgan, and Drew.
