Obituary of Robert Lewis Reber

Bob Reber, a resident of Hythe, Alberta passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 in Hythe at the age of 76 years, after a courageous two year battle with cancer. Bob was born in Hardisty, Alberta on July 11, 1939 to parents Lee and Bessie. He was the fifth child of the family to siblings Jimmy, Glen, Eddie, and Ken. Pat, Judy, and Johnny would join the growing family in the years to come. In his teenage years Bob helped out on his Uncle Roy's family farm when Roy became ill. When Roy passed away Bob set out to begin his 60 year expedition in the work force. Though Bob he had various jobs, he found his true passion behind the wheel of a truck and hauled just about everything imaginable throughout the years. He would often boast with pride how he held his Class 1 Drivers License from the age of sixteen through to his passing; a feat of having a Class 1 License for 60 years is nearly unheard of. Bob worked most of his life in Alberta within the oilfield and transportation industries. He was a 'Jack of all trades' in the truest form and enjoyed filling his free time with construction, antique cars, gold prospecting, and travelling. Family was a very important part of Bob's life. With his first marriage he welcomed sons Ron and Mark, and daughter Shannon. His second marriage to Gail brought his son Doug, and daughter Dana into the world. Through the years Bob's children blessed him with twelve grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Along with the joy of his family, Bob had great passion for his hobbies which included but were not limited to: gold panning and sluicing, travelling to Arizona, vegetable gardening, and parading his beloved 1927 Chevrolet and 1928 Model T antique cars. One of his earlier passions was music. His family cherishes the memory of him singing and playing his guitar - particularly, "Me and Bobby McGee." Bob always had a smile on his face, and his constant joking manner and the nicknames he chose for everyone will be treasured forever. Bob's last years were spent outside of Hythe working for Don Pearson hauling equipment and looking after livestock on the ranch. He would spend countless hours doing things that were not asked of him but needed to be done. That is the kind of work ethic that Bob believed in throughout his entire life. He especially enjoyed spending time feeding cattle, fixing fences, and any other job that would have him working outside. He would always be the first one to show up and the last one to leave. In the winter months, you may not have seen them, but always knew he had a pair of his favourite Helly Hansen long johns on underneath his clothes. In the warmer months, his shirt would be half unbuttoned and sleeves rolled up ready for work with his loyal companion, Sammy, in tow. Though Bob was very sick in the last two years of his life, he would never let the sickness get him down or break his spirit. He had an incredible inner strength that is unmatched, and he never complained. His positive outlook and courage will always be remembered, as well as the many life lessons that anyone who knew him learned from him. Bob was predeceased by his parents Lee and Bessie, his brothers: John, Ken, and Ed, his sister Judy, and his daughter Shannon. Bob is survived by his wife of 41 years, Gail, brothers Glen (Wendy) and Jimmy (Myrt), his sister Pat (Roger), his sons: Ron (Beckie), Mark (Jody), and Doug (Nicole), daughter Dana (Randy), and eight granddaughters, four grandsons, and three great grandchildren. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the Hythe Legion. Pauline Haycock officiated. Interment will be at a later date. "To the world he was one man, but to us, he was the world." For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Bob to the QEII Hospital Foundation - QEII Cancer Clinic, 10409-98th Street Grande Prairie, AB T8V2E8.
