Bruce Perry

Obituary of Bruce Harold Perry

Bruce Harold Perry, resident of Hythe, AB, formerly of Beaverlodge, AB, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Grande Prairie Regional Hospital at the age of 64 years.

Bruce was proud to be from Beaverlodge. He lived most of his life on the family farm south of town and completed his grade 12 at Beaverlodge Regional High School. In his final years, he found happiness living in the wonderful communities of the Pioneer Lodge and Pearson Place in Hythe.

Although he suffered many health challenges throughout his life, Bruce was fully engaged in many activities. Bruce found many ways to share his passion for music playing percussion in several bands and orchestras including the Beaverlodge Marching Band, the South Peace Orchestra, and the Ma Pa Band. Square dancing was an interest, especially in younger years, and he even tried his hand at calling dances from time to time as he had a wonderful singing voice. Bruce loved animals (especially two German Shepherds named Abba and Misty). He cheered enthusiastically for the Edmonton Oilers and enjoyed listening to classic country tunes and watching very old TV shows.

Bruce was friendly and outgoing and enjoyed conversations with the other residents in the care facilities. He enjoyed a good meal with turkey and gravy being his favourite. Bruce made friends easily and was cheerful and faith-filled in all his interactions. He believed in God and loved to sing old hymns. Bingo days were his favourite. Bruce was a whiz at card games and took on cribbage challengers eagerly. Recently he acquired a mobility scooter and spent time visiting his friends at the Pioneer Lodge and touring the town of Hythe. Happily, he had the opportunity at Pearson Place to continue his hobby of gardening and he was looking forward to spring planting.

Bruce worked briefly at the Beaverlodge Research Station and helped his dad Harold with farming. For a time Bruce was a volunteer community reporter for the Beaverlodge Advertiser and the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune. He also volunteered at the hospital in Grande Prairie. A proud member of the Beaverlodge Legion for many years Bruce rarely missed a Remembrance Day service and counted the Legion members as his friends.

Bruce will be missed by his sister Beth Mahler and her husband Otto and by his many “chosen” family members and dear friends. His special friend Karel Lukac was able to be with Bruce for his final moments playing him his favourite hymns.

He was predeceased by his father Harold Perry and by his mother Anne Perry.

Bruce will rest in peace in the Halcourt Cemetery next to his mom and dad. A family gathering in Bruces’ honour will be held in the spring close to what would have been his 65th birthday.

A memorial scholarship will be established in Bruce’s name to support a deserving student who has an aptitude for music.
