Gena Baker

Obituary of Gena Else Baker

It is with great sadness that we announce that Gena Baker of Hythe, AB, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Beaverlodge Hospital in Beaverlodge, AB, at the age of 93 years.

Surrounded by her family, she slipped peacefully away to join her parents Eivind and Bergit Homme; her husband Charles Baker; brothers: Olaf Homme, Knut Homme, and Edwin Homme; brothers-in-law: Neil Bell and Edward Baker; sisters-in-law: Florence Homme, Sue Homme, and Anna Homme; niece Cindy Boudreau and nephew Bob Baker.

Gena Else Baker was born on November 29, 1929, on an Emerson Trail farm to parents Eivind and Bergit Homme. She was the second oldest child in a family of five. She attended school in Glass Lake, AB, and Hythe. After school, she completed her hairdressing certificate and worked in Edmonton, AB, and Fort Smith, NWT. Returning to Hythe, she married Charles Baker in 1962. Charles and Gena settled on a farm on Emerson Trail to raise their two daughters.

When Charles passed away in January 1984, Gena continued to live on the farm until September 2016. She then moved into Hythe. Living independently was important to her and she was able to do that until her passing.

Gena was always very active in sports, especially bowling in the winter, and golfing in the summer. She was a proud member of the Sons Of Norway since 1989, volunteering many hours and enjoyed participating in various activities with the club around Western Canada. In the 2005 Alberta Senior Games, she won first place in her age division in ladies' golf, which lead to her participating at the national level where she won the bronze medal. Gena enjoyed being a member of the Hythe Seniors Club for many years, playing cards every Tuesday and participating in all their activities. Gena was a natural artist and enjoyed drawing and painting.

She will be dearly missed by her daughters: Thora Baker and Bergit (Kevin) Pulvermacher; grandchildren: Jorunn Baker, Alex Pulvermacher, and Ben Pulvermacher; sister Astrid Bell; brother-in-law Ronald (Sandi) Baker; sisters-in-law: Elaine Baker and Gertrude (Stan) Lawrence; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the EMS team and the staff at the Beaverlodge Hospital for their care and compassion.

A Funeral Service will be held, Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the Valhalla Lutheran Church (9802 100 Ave. Valhalla, Alberta). Interment to follow at Valhalla Cemetery.
