Geraldine Leah Mayer Obituary

Geraldine Leah Mayer, resident of Huallen, AB, formerly of Bruderheim, AB, passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 92 years.

Geraldine was born November 3, 1930, in Edmonton, AB, to Ambrose and Elsie Hennig (nee Wagner). They lived on a beautiful prairie farm near Bruderheim, AB. Geraldine was the oldest of six children, Evelyn, Leona, Loretta, Rodney, and Karen. She went to elementary school in Zewallie, AB, and Grades 7 - 9 at Concordia College in Edmonton, and then teacher’s training in Lakefield, Minnesota, US. She taught at St. John’s Lutheran School, and also Grade 5 in Wembley and Beaverlodge. Many students to this day say she was the best teacher they ever had. In her retirement years, she enjoyed volunteering at the thrift store in Beaverlodge.

Geraldine was adored by her grandchildren. She always had positive comments and praise for everyone. She loved to pray for her family, do daily devotions, and pray with her husband Edward.

She would bake brown bread weekly, played piano, and also played the organ and directed the choir at church. She loved her gardening, and her raspberries, canning, cooking, and traveling.

She will be sadly missed by her husband of 69 years Edward Mayer; children: Maureen Schadeck Wilhite (Ken), Marilyn Portwood (John), Merlyn Mayer (Barbara), Maurice Mayer (Janet), Marcel Mayer (Kerry), and Marcia Toews (Tim); grandchildren: Jesse Schadeck (Ashley), Melody Langevin (Leo), Amber Bryan (Craig), Adrien Schadeck (Magda), Dalen Schadeck (Bailie), Phillip Hibbert (Theresa), James Hibbert, Lukas Portwood (Kate), Jade Portwood, Mackenzie Mayer, Megan Shmyr (Cordell), Madison Thibeault (Bradley), Jared Mayer (Marla), Jordan Mayer (Stephanie), Joel Mayer (Christine), Leah Johnston (Jeremy), Riley Mayer (Corissa), Nathan Mayer (Dakota), Gavin Mayer (Courtney), Alicia Peters (Kevin), Averyl Toews, Andrea Toews (Sheldon), and Arilyn Toews; as well as 41 great-grandchildren.

Geraldine was predeceased by her father Ambrose Hennig, mother Elsie Hennig, brother Rodney Hennig, son-in-law David Schadeck, and her grandson Riley Mayer.
