Marie JoAnne Mennell passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the Hythe Continuing Care Centre in Hythe, AB.

Marie was born on June 18, 1939, in Provost, AB, to Wenceslaus and Maria Miihlbauer. She grew up in the countryside and deeply cherished her life on the family farm. A few years later, she was joined by her brother, Otto. Marie loved school and fondly recalled riding her horse to class alongside Otto, fueled by her lifelong love for animals.

Though she was unable to complete her formal education due to the untimely passing of her mother during her teenage years, Marie stepped into the role of homemaker, providing care and devotion to her small family. She often shared the lighthearted memory that, years after her father's passing, the doctor would tease her that it was due to her cooking.

Marie later met and married Fredrick James Mennell. The couple eventually settled in Daysland, AB, where they welcomed their only child, a son, John Adam. Coming from humble beginnings, Marie and Fred lived a life content with few luxuries, focusing instead on family. Their journey later took them to Okotoks, before moving north to Elmworth, then to Valhalla Centre, and finally settling in Hythe.

Marie will be lovingly remembered for her quick-witted sense of humour and her happy-go-lucky attitude. She loved Christmas and could be heard singing carols and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas throughout the year. Marie was a gentle-spirited lady who showed kindness and sincere appreciation to all those who helped her, making her final years a time of peace.

She was predeceased by her parents, Wenceslaus and Maria Miihlbauer; her beloved husband, Fredrick James Mennell; her son, John Adam Mennell; and her brother, Otto Albert Miihlbauer.

Sincere thanks are extended to the staff at the Hythe Continuing Care Centre, who showed Marie such love and compassion, graciously caring for her and bringing comfort to her final years.

A Graveside Service to celebrate Marie's life will be held at the Hythe Cemetery on Tuesday, July 28, at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Paul Frederickson of Valhalla Lutheran Church officiating.
