Melvin Banta Obituary

Melvin “Mel” Banta passed away August 28, 2024, at the age of 91, at the Beaverlodge Municipal Hospital, in Beaverlodge, Alberta.

Mel was born on May 27, 1933, to Wesley and Florence Banta. He was raised in Smithers, BC. In his early years, the family lived up at Dry Gulch, BC, where his father worked as a placer miner. After Wesley’s passing, Florence moved the family back to Smithers.

Around that time, Mel began working at the local mill to help support the family. Not long after, an opportunity came up to learn how to drive a fuel truck for an independent Imperial Oil agent. That opportunity turned into Mel’s lifelong career. He continued driving as the business changed hands over the years, always staying on with Imperial Oil (Esso). By the time he retired, Mel had become the company’s longest-serving home delivery driver, proudly marking 50 years of service.

When Mel retired at 63, he thought he would enjoy the downtime, but that feeling was short-lived. He quickly realized he needed something more to keep himself busy. That’s when Mel’s Whirlygigs was born. What started as a hobby turned into a passion that lasted 20 years, until it came to an end after his stroke in 2018.

After his stroke, his son Wayne moved Mel to Beaverlodge. The intent was to help his dad recover from the stroke, utilize other opportunities to help get his strength back, and support Mel’s independence as best as possible.

Mel is survived by his son Wayne (Janet); his grandson Blake; his younger brother Ray of Wardner, BC; along with many nephews, nieces, and cousins. He will also be remembered by many great friends in the area.

Mel was predeceased by his parents, Wesley and Florence Banta; his stepfather, Cliff DeLodge; his sisters, Verna and Marie; his brother, Carl; and, lastly, his devoted wife, Martha.

Wayne would like to invite anyone who knew his dad to attend a graveside service in his honour. The service will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 1:00 pm at Smithers Cemetery (1958 Dominion Street), Smithers, BC. Your presence would be deeply appreciated as we gather to remember and celebrate his life.
